Few filmmakers made borders and wandering a theme so entirely their own as Tony Gatlif. The French director, who died at the age of 77 — his death was reported on Saturday (6) —, devoted much of his work to the Roma and Romani peoples of Europe and to characters who are always passing through: those who leave, those who return and those who carry in their bodies the memory of more than one country. In a magazine that speaks of crossings, his farewell is also that of an author who filmed the crossing like few others.

Born Michel (Boualem) Dahmani in Algiers, on 10 September 1948, the son of a Kabyle father and an Andalusian mother of Romani origin, Gatlif came to France in 1960, still a boy, in the aftermath of the Algerian war. That biography of departure — leaving one country, starting over in another — would later return, transformed into cinema. From the early 1980s on, his filmography focused on the Roma (the "Gypsies" of Europe), a people whose history is made of displacement.

Gatlif made films that became landmarks of cinema about the Roma. In "Les Princes" (1982), he looked at a Gypsy family on the French margins. In "Latcho Drom" (1993) — "safe journey", in Romani — he crossed several countries following Gypsy music, from Rajasthan to Andalusia, in a documentary almost without words. "Gadjo Dilo" (1997) took a young Frenchman to a Romani village in Romania. Then came "Swing" (2001), "Transylvania" (2006) and "Korkoro" (2009), the latter about the persecution of the Roma during the Second World War. In almost all of them, music is not a soundtrack: it is a character.

O filme que voltou à Argélia — e a CannesLe film qui est retourné en Algérie — et à CannesThe film that returned to Algeria — and to Cannes

The high point of recognition came with "Exils" (2004), in which a couple makes the journey opposite to Gatlif's own: leaving France for Algeria in search of their roots. The film earned him the Best Director award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It was, in a way, his own story told in reverse — the exile who retraces the border that once brought him. Few European filmmakers insisted so much, and for so long, on giving a face and a voice to those who live between countries.

Bon voyage, latcho drom.Gatlif's work speaks directly to the heart of this magazine. Migration, a divided identity, the right to belong to more than one place, music as the memory of those who move — these are themes any immigrant recognizes. He did not film the Roma as an exotic curiosity, but as people who carry an entire culture in their baggage. He leaves behind a legacy of more than twenty films and the memory of an author who turned uprootedness into art. Safe journey, latcho drom.
