The news went around the world on 1 September: China announced that its installed solar capacity had surpassed that of coal for the first time. It is a real and symbolic milestone in the global energy transition. But it calls for a careful reading — because "capacity" is not "generation," and confusing the two leads to the wrong conclusion. Let's take it step by step.

According to data attributed to the China Electricity Council, at the end of June 2026 installed solar capacity reached about 1.274 gigawatts (GW), practically tied with coal's, at around 1.275 GW. The 1 September announcement marks the moment solar crosses that line and becomes the country's largest source of installed capacity. To put it in perspective: China alone accounts for the planet's largest solar expansion — the scale is unprecedented.

II · A distinção-chaveII · La distinction cléII · The key distinction

Capacidade não é geraçãoCapacité n'est pas productionCapacity is not generation

Au premier semestre 2026, le charbon a représenté 49,7 % de la production électrique chinoise ; éolien et solaire réunis, environ 25 % ; et l'ensemble des renouvelables (hydraulique compris) 41,2 %.Installed capacity is how much a plant CAN produce if it ran at full load. Generation is how much it ACTUALLY produces. And this is where the capacity factor comes in: solar power only generates when there is sun, with a factor of around 25%; coal can run almost all the time, with a factor close to 85%. That is why, even with nearly equal capacities, coal still produces far more electricity. In the first half of 2026, coal accounted for 49,7% of Chinese power generation; wind and solar combined, about 25%; and renewables as a whole (including hydropower) 41,2%.

That is why THE CROSSING TIME did not repeat the wording of some bulletins, which spoke of "solar generation above coal." The official figure is for capacity, not generation. The distinction does not diminish the achievement — it just puts it in its proper place.

III · O contrapontoIII · Le contrepointIII · The counterpoint

A China ainda constrói carvãoLa Chine construit encore du charbonChina is still building coal

As duas coisas convivem. There is a second figure that rules out triumphalism: China continues to build new coal-fired plants — the country accounts for about 86% of the new coal capacity due to come online worldwide in 2026. In other words, the Asian giant is advancing the transition while, at the same time, expanding the most polluting fuel. The two coexist. It is this paradox — not the simple headline — that tells the real story of global energy today.

For the TCT audience, the contrast is what matters. While China installs solar at a record pace, Europe is living through an energy surge that pushed eurozone inflation to 3,3% in August (the subject of another article in this edition). These are two sides of the same global energy board: whoever dominates the manufacturing of panels and batteries — today, above all China — gains economic and geopolitical weight. The transition is not only environmental; it is also a contest for industrial power. And it decides, at the far end, the price of the electricity bill that reaches your home in Paris, Lisbon or São Paulo.
