Nós somos aqueles que atravessaramWe are the ones who crossed

Because no one packs an entire life into a suitcase — and yet millions of people try, every single day.

There are people who are born in one place. And there are people who must be born again in another.

To migrate may be one of the quietest forms of courage.

Because no one packs an entire life into a suitcase.

A suitcase holds clothes, documents, a few photographs, perhaps a gift from someone left behind. But it cannot hold Sundays with family. It cannot hold the smell of your mother's house. It cannot hold your father's embrace. It cannot hold friends, familiar streets, the voices that speak our name as if it, too, were a place.

Those who migrate learn early that leaving does not mean merely crossing a border.

Significa atravessar a si mesmo. It means crossing yourself.

It is arriving in a city where no one knows your story and, even so, rising every morning to write a new one.

It is learning another language and realizing that, for a while, even your own personality seems to speak more softly.

It is having so much to say and so few words to explain it.

It is hearing the accent in your own voice and understanding that it is not a flaw. It is the geography of our story.

Duas mulheres atravessam uma rua parisiense
Uma rua qualquer, uma cidade nova. Migrar é aprender a dizer bonjour, merci, pardon — enquanto, por dentro, algumas lembranças continuam falando português.Any street, a new city. To migrate is to learn to say bonjour, merci, pardon — while, inside, some memories keep speaking Portuguese.

It is looking out the window of a train crossing Paris and thinking, for a few seconds:

How did my life end up here?”

Some crossed the ocean for love.

Há quem tenha vindo por trabalho. Some came for work.

Some fled poverty, violence, the lack of opportunity.

Há quem tenha chegado com um contrato. Some arrived with a contract.

Há quem tenha chegado apenas com esperança.Some arrived with nothing but hope.

Alguns encontraram exatamente aquilo que procuravam. Outros encontraram solidão.Some found exactly what they were looking for. Others found loneliness.

Because there is a part of immigration that almost never shows up in the photographs.

Não aparece no primeiro vídeo dizendo: “Cheguei na Europa.”It does not show up in the smile in front of the Eiffel Tower. It does not show up in the first video saying: “I made it to Europe.”

It is the longing when someone falls ill on the other side of the ocean. It is receiving hard news and discovering that thousands of kilometers stand between you and the embrace you wish you could give.

É perder aniversários. It is missing birthdays.

Casamentos.Weddings.

Nascimentos.Births.

Despedidas.Farewells.

It is realizing that time, too, crosses borders — and waits for no one to return.

What the photograph doesn't show. There is a part of immigration that never appears in the first video saying “I made it to Europe.”

Mas existe outra história. A história daqueles que resistem. But there is another story. The story of those who endure.

Of those who started out cleaning houses and later opened businesses of their own.

Of those who arrived without speaking the language and, years later, help others find their own way.

Of the women who rebuilt their lives after violence.

Of the men and women who faced paperwork, queues, refusals, closed doors — and kept on believing.

Of the Brazilians who turned small restaurants into gathering places.

Of the professionals who made their diplomas cross oceans.

Dos empreendedores que começaram praticamente do zero.Of the entrepreneurs who started from almost nothing.

Of the mothers raising children between two cultures.

Of the children who learn that they can belong to two places at once.

And there are also stories that did not end the way they should have.

People who left to build a life and never managed to return.

Pessoas desaparecidas.People who vanished.

Famílias esperando uma ligação.Families waiting for a phone call.

Histórias interrompidas longe de casa.Stories cut short far from home.

That is why speaking of immigration should never be merely speaking of numbers.

Border control. Behind every statistic there is someone: a mother waiting for news, a son trying to make it, a woman starting over.

Por trás de cada estatística existe alguém.Behind every statistic there is someone.

Existe uma mãe esperando notícias. There is a mother waiting for news.

Um filho tentando vencer.A son trying to make it.

Uma mulher recomeçando.A woman starting over.

Um trabalhador acordando antes do amanhecer.A worker waking before dawn.

Um estudante aprendendo.A student learning.

Um empresário tentando construir. An entrepreneur trying to build something.

Uma família separada por continentes.A family separated by continents.

Um sonho. Um medo. Uma saudade. Uma história.A dream. A fear. A longing. A story.

Talvez seja isso que tantas fronteiras ainda não conseguiram compreender:Perhaps this is what so many borders have still not managed to understand:

Antes de sermos imigrantes, somos pessoas. Before we are immigrants, we are people.

E pessoas carregam mundos dentro delasAnd people carry worlds inside them

Those who cross a border do not necessarily abandon their homeland. Sometimes, they come to carry it even more deeply.

O Brasil continua existindo naquele café feito cedo.Brazil goes on existing in that coffee brewed early in the morning.

Na música colocada no domingo. In the music played on Sunday.

Na comida preparada para os amigos estrangeiros. In the meal cooked for foreign friends.

Na chamada de vídeo com a família. In the video call with family.

Na bandeira guardada em alguma gaveta. In the flag tucked away in some drawer.

Naquele saudade que nenhuma outra língua conseguiu traduzir completamente. In that saudade that no other language has ever fully managed to translate.

Between worlds. The person who left no longer belongs solely to the place they left — but never belongs completely to the place where they arrived either.

Com o tempo, algo curioso acontece. With time, something curious happens.

The person who left no longer belongs solely to the place they left. But never belongs completely to the place where they arrived either. They come to live between worlds.

E talvez exista beleza nisso. And perhaps there is beauty in that. Because some people were not made to belong to a single geography. They were made to build bridges. Between countries. Between languages. Between cultures. Between people.

Um dia, talvez, alguém pergunte: “De onde você é?”One day, perhaps, someone will ask: “Where are you from?”

And the answer will no longer be so simple.

Because you will be a little of the city where you were born.

Um pouco das pessoas que deixou.A little of the people you left behind.

A little of the streets where you learned to survive.

Um pouco dos países que atravessou.A little of the countries you crossed.

Um pouco das perdas.A little of the losses.

Muito dos recomeços.Much of the new beginnings.

And entirely made of the choices you had the courage to make.

Migrar é partir. Mas também é permanecer.
É perder. Mas também encontrar.
To migrate is to leave. But it is also to remain.
It is to lose. But it is also to find.

É sentir medo e continuar caminhando mesmo assim. It is to feel fear and keep walking anyway.

Talvez ninguém atravesse um oceano e permaneça exatamente a mesma pessoa. Porque algumas viagens mudam nosso endereço. Outras mudam nossa história. E algumas mudam quem somos para sempre.Perhaps no one crosses an ocean and remains exactly the same person. Because some journeys change our address. Others change our story. And some change who we are forever.

Atravessamos aeroportos, estações, idiomas, burocracias, preconceitos, saudades e medos. We cross airports, stations, languages, bureaucracies, prejudices, longings, and fears.

Mas continuamos.But we go on.

Because, deep down, every migration begins with a question:
“What if there is a possible life on the other side?”

Millions of people asked that question before us. Millions still will.

And as long as there are people willing to cross borders in search of dignity, safety, love, freedom, or simply a chance to begin again, there will be stories that deserve to be told.
